These abilities may be mundane, supernatural, or anything in between. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <em>Chrono Trigger <\/em>and <em>Chrono Cross<\/em> featured a diverse array of Techniques that were, often, unique to the individual character. Techniques are best when they are personalized to the character. To this end, each time a player character gains a new Technique they &#8216;build&#8217; it with Game Master involvement using the rules below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technique Basics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Techniques can, essentially, be of any source the player imagines. They might be an impressive feat of physical strength, a secret martial art, a photon emitter, a grappling hook put to new purpose, or simple magic. The flavor is entirely up to the player and the character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some basics that are true for techniques of all types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>No Friendly Fire<\/strong>: Techniques do not harm allies (unless specifically stated).<\/li><li><strong>Actions Cost<\/strong>: Techniques take 1 to 3 actions to use. Techniques that require more actions are more powerful but may take the player&#8217;s entire <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/core-player-mechanics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turn<\/a> to use.<\/li><li><strong>Point of Origin<\/strong>: It is the designated square within the technique&#8217;s range where the technique &#8216;activates.&#8217; <\/li><li><strong>Line of Sight<\/strong>: Techniques usually require <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/environment-positioning\/\" target=\"_blank\">light of sight<\/a> to the point of origin.<\/li><li><strong>Tech Points<\/strong>: Techniques are learned as the character acquires TP.<\/li><li><strong>Character Level<\/strong>: Most Techniques incrementally increase in power as the user&#8217;s stats improve with each level up.<\/li><li><strong>Magic<\/strong>: Techniques can only be &#8216;magic&#8217; if the character has the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/character-traits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magical Aptitude<\/a> trait and has an Elemental stat of 20 or above.<\/li><li><strong>Cooperative Techniques<\/strong>: Dual and Triple techniques can only be learned by characters with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/character-traits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Power Link<\/a> trait. This requires the characters learning the Dual\/Triple technique to invest TP.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acquiring Techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Characters learn up to eight techniques as they gain <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/core-player-mechanics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tech Points<\/a>. As in <em>Chrono Trigger <\/em>and <em>Chrono Cross, <\/em> characters do not start knowing a technique but learn their first one very early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>TP Total<\/th><th>Techniques Known<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>5<\/strong><\/td><td>1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>90<\/td><td>2<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>150<\/td><td>3<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>400<\/td><td>4<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>500<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>600<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>800<\/td><td>7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1000<\/td><td>8<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building Techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Building new techniques is the most complex part of this system. It&#8217;s also the most important mechanic for establishing the unique feel of a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of all of this is to let players make techniques that are as unique, versatile, and dynamic as those seen in <em>Chrono Trigger<\/em> and <em>Chrono Cross.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s preview the steps of building a new Technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Select Primary Technique Category<\/strong>: Pick one of the following.<ul><li><strong>Weapon<\/strong>: This category augments a Strike with your equipped weapon.<\/li><li><strong>Damage<\/strong>: This category deals damage independently of your weapon.<\/li><li><strong>Restore<\/strong>: This category restores HP, ends status effects, and\/or revives from KOed.<\/li><li><strong>Summon<\/strong>: This category summons a barrier, ally, or terrain effect.<\/li><li><strong>Utility<\/strong>: This category offers utilitarian effects like moving characters and causing status effects.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Select Element<\/strong>\/<strong>Effect Type<\/strong>: By default, you can only build techniques of your <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/core-player-mechanics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Innate Element or Physical\/None<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Select 1st Tier Qualities:<\/strong> Each type has a different list of qualities to choose from. Select three 1st Tier Qualities for your Technique. If you stop here you will have created a Technique that can be used with <em>1 Action<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Select 2nd Tier Qualities<\/strong> (Optional): If you are of the required level, you may select three 2nd Tier Qualities for your Technique. If you stop here you will have created a Technique that can be used with <em>2 Actions<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Select 3rd Tier Qualities<\/strong> (Optional): If you are of the required level, you may select three 3rd Tier Qualities for your Technique. If you stop here you will have created a Technique that can be used with <em>3 Actions<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Magic Qualities <\/strong>(Optional): If your character has a Elemental stat of at least 20 and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/character-traits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magic Aptitude trait<\/a>, you may select one Magic Quality for each Technique. If so the Technique is considered <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/core-player-mechanics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magic<\/a>. <\/li><li><strong>Submit Technique to Game Master<\/strong>: Send your selections to the Game Master for combining and final approval.<\/li><li><strong>Add the Finalized Technique<\/strong>: Record the completed technique on your character sheet.<\/li><li><strong>Use your new Technique<\/strong>: Try it out in the next battle!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:15% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"117\" height=\"117\" src=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Kaihaku.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Kaihaku.png 117w, https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Kaihaku-90x90.png 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 117px) 100vw, 117px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background has-normal-font-size\">As players build their first technique they may ask, &#8220;Where&#8217;s the damage math?&#8221; It&#8217;s intentionally obfuscated to keep the process as simple as possible and to allow players to focus on what looks cool.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dual\/Triple Techniques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Characters with the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kaihaku.net\/Chrono\/character-traits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Power Link<\/a>&nbsp;trait can combine their techniques to extreme effect. In fact, Dual\/Triple techniques are the most powerful abilities available to players! But that power comes with restrictions and requires a significant commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The characters must within <em>Range <\/em>of the other participants and have <em>Line of Sight<\/em> with each other to use a Dual\/Triple technique. This is the Range listed for the Dual\/Triple Technique.<\/li><li>Each character must contribute the required number of actions. The required actions are always equal to the individual technique with the <em>most <\/em>required actions.<\/li><li>The characters must <em>invest<\/em> equal amounts of TP to learn the Dual\/Triple Technique.<\/li><li>Dual\/Triple techniques are <em>combined <\/em>techniques.
